Cape Coast, June 25, 2025 — A second storey-building collapsed at Idun near Amissah Ekyir in the Central Region early Tuesday morning, killing one person and injuring another — the second such tragedy in Cape Coast within five days.
The deceased, Ernestina Nduom, reportedly died after being pulled from the rubble and rushed to the hospital. Her grandson, who was with her at the time, sustained injuries and is receiving treatment at the Cape Coast Teaching Hospital. Another male victim was also rescued and is undergoing medical care.
According to Cape Coast Mayor, George Justice Arthur, the incident occurred around 2:00 a.m. on June 25. He personally visited the family to break the news of Madam Nduom’s passing.
The collapse comes just days after another building near London Bridge in Cape Coast gave way last Saturday, killing two elderly persons and injuring three others.

These back-to-back disasters bring the death toll to three in less than a week, all following intense rainfall that has battered the historic coastal city.
Old Buildings Under Scrutiny
Cape Coast’s central area is dotted with colonial-era and aging structures, many of which are now visibly weakened. The Metropolitan Chief Executive has pledged swift action, including demolition of all structurally unsafe buildings to prevent further tragedies.
“We cannot sit idle while our people die,” Mayor Justice Arthur stated. “All old and weak buildings in the metropolis will be pulled down to avert more disasters, especially as the rains continue.”
Authorities have begun structural assessments in high-risk zones and are urging residents living in dilapidated buildings to evacuate immediately.
Emergency services and city engineers remain on high alert as the region prepares for more rains in the coming days.
