Bawumia Aide Threatens to Push for ‘Self-Protection Committee’ Amid Security Lapses in Ablekuma North Rerun

Dennis Miracles Aboagye, a key aide to Former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has issued a strong warning to the Ghana Police Service and President John Dramani Mahama over their failure to respond decisively to the violent incidents that occurred during the Ablekuma North parliamentary rerun.

Speaking on Channel One TV’s Breakfast Daily on Wednesday, July 16, Aboagye expressed outrage that no concrete action had been taken six days after the attacks and said he would propose the formation of a “Self-Protection Committee” during the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) conference if nothing changes by Saturday, July 19.

“It has been six days. If nothing is done, the only thing that will be left for the NPP to do is to set up the Self-Protection Committee on Saturday, and I am going to insist,” he warned.

He explained that the upcoming NPP conference, scheduled for Saturday and dedicated to party reforms, would be the ideal platform for tabling the proposal.

“Saturday is a conference for reforms. I will raise my hand and recommend that while we have a legal and elections committee, we need a Self-Protection Committee. Because if the NPP doesn’t do that, I will not go out there to any polling station,” he declared.

According to Aboagye, the proposed committee would act as a dedicated in-house security structure to ensure the safety of party members and voters during elections, especially in areas deemed volatile or underserved by police protection.

“The nature of this committee will be that when we find ourselves in a chaotic scene, I should have like 10 or 20 people from the NPP standing in to protect me because the police cannot do it for me,” he explained.

His comments follow disturbing scenes at the St. Peter’s polling centre during the July 11 rerun, where unknown assailants stormed the station, disrupted the voting process, and physically assaulted several individuals. Among the victims was former Fisheries Minister, Mavis Hawa Koomson.

The incident has raised alarms over the preparedness and neutrality of state security agencies during elections, prompting calls from civil society groups such as CODEO for urgent reforms.

Interior Minister Mubarak Muntaka has since assured the public that all those involved in the attacks will face justice, regardless of their political affiliation.
