Government Dismisses Reports of Converting National Cathedral into Cultural Centre

The Minister of State in charge of Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, has debunked reports claiming that the government plans to convert the National Cathedral project into a National Cultural Convention Centre.
Speaking on the Citi Breakfast Show on Tuesday, July 22, 2025, Mr. Kwakye Ofosu labeled the reports as inaccurate and misleading, asserting that no such decision has been made by the government.
“Let me clarify that, contrary to reports that emerged last week, the government has not decided to turn the site into a cultural convention centre; nothing of the sort has happened,” he stated.
Clarifying the Misunderstanding
The clarification follows media claims that the National Cathedral project would be repurposed under the government’s 24-hour economy initiative for the culture, creative arts, and tourism sectors—specifically under a component referred to as ‘SHOW24’.
Kwakye Ofosu explained that a continental organisation, currently operating out of rented premises in Accra, had approached the 24-Hour Economy Secretariat with an unsolicited proposal to relocate its headquarters to the cathedral site. As part of the offer, the organisation suggested constructing a cultural and convention centre on the land.
“It is merely an unsolicited proposal. The government has not engaged with it or taken any decision in that regard,” he clarified.
Mahama Government Stance Remains Firm
The Minister also reaffirmed President John Dramani Mahama’s longstanding position on the cathedral project—no public funds will be used to complete it.
“I can state with authority that as long as President Mahama remains the head of this country, he is unprepared to see even a pesewa of taxpayers’ money put into this National Cathedral project,” Kwakye Ofosu stressed.
Awaiting Forensic Audit Before Final Decision
He concluded by stating that any final decision on the stalled project site will only be made after a forensic audit is completed.
“As for what will be done to the site, that determination will be made after we have all the facts. But I can assure Ghanaians that no public fund will go into this cathedral,” he assured.
