Mamprusi Traditional Council Slams Curfew on Nalerigu, Demands Immediate Government Apology and Action

The Mamprusi Traditional Council has issued a stern rebuke of the government’s decision to impose a curfew on Nalerigu and surrounding areas, labelling the move as arbitrary, unjustified, and a disrespectful affront to the authority of the Nayiri.

In a statement released from the Nayiri Palace on Monday, July 28, the Council expressed deep disappointment over the lack of prior consultation before the curfew was announced. The government directive, effective from 2:00 PM to 6:00 AM daily beginning July 27, 2025, came in the wake of the fatal shooting of two students at Nalerigu Senior High School.

“The Nayiri Palace has taken grave notice of a communique circulating in the public domain announcing the imposition of a curfew… the Palace expresses its deep displeasure and dismay at the arbitrary and unjustified manner in which this curfew has been imposed,” the statement read.

While acknowledging the seriousness of the student killings, the Palace strongly rejected the implication that Nalerigu is a volatile area, insisting that the township remains calm, peaceful, and stable, and must not be lumped together with conflict-prone areas like Bawku.

“Nalerigu Is Not Bawku”

The statement cautioned that conflating Nalerigu with the protracted conflict in the Bawku Traditional Area was both misguided and dangerous. It emphasised that Mamprugu, especially towns such as Walewale and Nalerigu, have enjoyed peace and stability.

“It is troubling that the government continues to pursue a misguided policy of equating the longstanding conflict in the Bawku Traditional Area with the peace and stability that exists in Mamprugu.”

Curfew Called a “Reactive and Unconvincing” Measure

The Council dismissed the government’s rationale that the curfew was intended to support the evacuation of students, calling it “unfortunate and unconvincing,” and stated that such reactive security measures do not promote sustainable peace.

Demands to Government

The Mamprusi Traditional Council called on the government to take the following immediate steps:

  1. Lift the curfew on Nalerigu and its environs without delay.
  2. Launch a full, transparent investigation into the killing of the two students, and bring the perpetrators to justice.
  3. Issue a formal apology to the Nayiri and the people of Mamprugu for imposing the curfew without engaging traditional leadership.

The statement concluded with a strong call for the government to respect traditional institutions, emphasising that collaboration, not unilateral action, is essential for peace and national cohesion.

“Peace in Mamprugu must be preserved through collaboration and respect—not through unilateral and poorly informed decisions,” the Palace warned.

This response adds pressure to the government as tensions continue to rise in northern Ghana following multiple violent incidents, including the recent killings in Nalerigu, Bawku, and Asawase, and the subsequent curfew and arms ban enforcement.
