The Greater Accra Regional Security Council (REGSEC) has announced a major demolition exercise targeting unauthorized structures on the protected Tema Ramsar Site. The operation is scheduled to commence on Monday, August 4, 2025, and will affect multiple areas including Communities 5, 6, 10, 11, and 12.
The move comes amid growing concern over unlawful encroachment on the Ramsar wetland, a vital ecological zone known for supporting diverse wildlife, controlling floods, and purifying water.
During a recent impromptu visit to the site, Greater Accra Regional Minister Linda Ocloo expressed deep concern over the scale of illegal developments, warning that such actions posed “a serious threat to the ecological integrity of the Ramsar Site.”
“This is a protected area, and we cannot allow private developers or individuals to compromise its long-term environmental value,” the Minister stated.
She also issued a stern warning to individuals involved in the illegal sale of land within the wetland, urging them to desist immediately. Madam Ocloo emphasized that the government would not tolerate the commercialisation of protected lands and would take legal action where necessary.
REGSEC is urging all residents and occupants of the affected areas to vacate and remove their belongings ahead of the demolition to avoid loss or damage.
The Tema Ramsar Site is designated as a wetland of international importance under the Ramsar Convention, underscoring its role in flood control, biodiversity conservation, and environmental sustainability.
This demolition marks part of a broader effort by REGSEC and the Regional Coordinating Council to reclaim and protect environmentally sensitive zones across the Greater Accra Region.
