Accra – August 7, 2025
The Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC) has suspended a proposed 20% increase in public transport fares after a high-level meeting with the Ministry of Transport on Wednesday, August 6.
The fare hike, which was initially scheduled to take effect on Friday, August 8, had sparked public backlash over the lack of broader stakeholder engagement. Transport operators had earlier announced that the adjustment would impact shared taxis, trotros, intercity buses, and haulage services, citing provisions under the Administrative Arrangement on Public Transport Fares.
However, following the discussions, GRTCC issued a statement on Thursday, August 7, noting:
“Transport Operators have agreed to suspend the purported 20% increment in public transport fares as a result of the lack of broader consultations on the decision.”
As part of the resolution, all transport operators have been directed to maintain the 15% fare reduction, which has been in effect since May 24, 2025.
The Ministry of Transport is expected to convene further consultations with all relevant parties before any future fare adjustments are made.
