Bagbin Appeals for Calm in Sawla-Tuna-Kalba Amid Unrest and Displacement

Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has appealed to residents of the Sawla-Tuna-Kalba (STK) District to remain calm following reports of gunfire and the displacement of some locals.

In a statement shared on Facebook, Mr. Bagbin described the situation as “deeply concerning,” urging the community to remain composed despite the disturbances. He reminded residents of STK’s long-standing reputation for peaceful coexistence, stressing the need to preserve that identity.

“STK has always been admired for its peaceful nature, and it is important that this reputation is preserved,” he said.

The Speaker commended youth groups that have spoken out against inflammatory remarks and encouraged ongoing dialogue, tolerance, and restraint. He also appealed to traditional and opinion leaders to play an active role in efforts to restore calm.

Mr. Bagbin further called on residents to fully cooperate with security agencies deployed to stabilise the area, emphasising that peace and unity must remain the priority.

The district is currently under a 12-hour curfew. Meanwhile, reports indicate that some residents fleeing the violence drowned in the White Volta on Thursday after their boat capsized.
