GES Reports GH¢5.3 Billion Investment in Education, Announces Major Reforms and Support Initiatives

The Ghana Education Service (GES) has outlined significant financial commitments and reforms in the education sector, with over GH¢5.3 billion released to strengthen basic and secondary education nationwide.

In a statement signed by Public Relations Officer Daniel Fenyi and released on Sunday, August 31, GES said the government’s interventions reflect a clear commitment to improving access, infrastructure, teaching, and learning.

According to the update, GH¢1 billion has been channeled into the Free Senior High School (Free SHS) programme, with an additional GH¢2.9 billion disbursed to the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund) for infrastructure and educational projects. Arrears on Capitation Grants have been cleared with GH¢72.8 million, while GH¢122.8 million has been provided for Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) registration fees.

Teacher welfare and support have also been prioritized, with GH¢52 million released for trainee allowances. Over 30,000 diploma teachers who upgraded their qualifications have been placed on the Public Service salary scale, while the teacher licensure examination has been scrapped to ease the transition from training to professional teaching. Teachers are now eligible for promotion to the director rank under new reforms.

GES confirmed that GH¢895 million has been paid to the School Feeding Programme, with an increase in the feeding budget per child. Feeding grants for special needs schools have also been fully settled. To further support students, the government has introduced a free sanitary pad initiative for all schoolgirls to promote menstrual hygiene and reduce absenteeism.

The report also highlighted structural improvements in education delivery. Ninety-nine schools previously under the double-track system have returned to the single-track model, and districts have been directed to use the 2025 District Assemblies Common Fund (DACF) to construct new nursery, primary, and junior high schools.

Other initiatives include the revival of Parent-Teacher Associations (PTAs) to strengthen school governance, GH¢300 million funding for the “No Fee Stress” policy to support SHS graduates entering tertiary institutions, and payment of WASSCE practical exam fees. Stalled E-Block projects are also being revisited to ensure completion.

GES further assured parents and stakeholders of the timely release of academic calendars for basic schools to enhance planning and coordination.
