Asiamah: Criticism of Bawumia Could Boost His Chances in 2028

Second Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Andrew Asiamah, says former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia could benefit from voter sympathy arising from the criticism and ridicule he has faced, positioning him as a strong contender for the 2028 presidential election.
Speaking during Dr. Bawumia’s campaign tour of the Ashanti Region on Tuesday, September 10, 2025, Mr. Asiamah said history shows that presidential candidates who suffer setbacks and vilification often gain public empathy and later rise to lead the country.
“Most of our former presidents were lifted and given the chance to lead the country after being vilified,” he said, citing the examples of John Agyekum Kufuor, the late Prof. John Evans Atta Mills, and Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.
He argued that former President John Dramani Mahama also gained sympathy after multiple electoral defeats, which helped him return to power despite not being “superior in terms of ideas and knowledge” to Dr. Bawumia.
“In the 2024 elections, if you compare Bawumia and Mahama, Mahama was not superior in terms of anything to Bawumia. But because he had suffered multiple electoral defeats, H.E. John Mahama became so sympathetic to Ghanaians. And that is exactly what we find ourselves in now,” he stated.
Mr. Asiamah stressed that Bawumia’s resilience and experience make him the right choice for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and for Ghana’s leadership in 2028.
