Mahama Hosts CSOs, Faith Leaders in High-Level Talks on Galamsey

President John Dramani Mahama is set to hold a high-level meeting today, Friday, October 3, 2025, with civil society organisations (CSOs) and key stakeholders to chart sustainable solutions to the devastation caused by illegal mining (galamsey).
The engagement will bring together influential groups including the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Ghana, Christian Council of Ghana, Ghana Pentecostal and Charismatic Council, the Office of the Chief Imam, the Ghana Muslim Mission, Arocha Ghana, and IMANI Ghana, among others.
Government’s Position
Presidential Aide, Dr. Sammy Ayeh, explained that the meeting is designed to collect feedback and strategies from stakeholders to complement government interventions already underway.
“The purpose of the meeting is for the government to receive feedback, strategies, and suggestions from these organisations and institutions to complement the efforts already in place to end galamsey. Since the inception of this government, significant milestones have been chalked up. From operational to legislative measures, we have seen steps put in place to repeal LI 2462, which had become a bone of contention,” Dr. Ayeh said.
He stressed that the government views the fight against galamsey as a shared national responsibility, requiring cooperation across political, religious, and civic lines.
Reactions from Stakeholders
The decision to broaden consultations has attracted mixed reactions.
- The Dormaahene, Osagyefo Oseadeeyo Agyeman Badu II, praised the move, describing it as “a step in the right direction.”
- However, Franklin Cudjoe, President of IMANI Africa, voiced skepticism, arguing that the government risks relying too heavily on dialogue at the expense of concrete action.
Looking Ahead
The meeting is expected to produce actionable proposals on how faith-based groups, civic bodies, and policymakers can jointly tackle illegal mining, which continues to threaten Ghana’s water bodies, farmlands, and communities.
