NAIMOS Task Force Cracks Down on Illegal Mining in Western Region — Hundreds Surrender, Drugs and Equipment Seized

The National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) Task Force has intensified its campaign against illegal mining in the Western Region, conducting large-scale operations that led to the destruction of mining equipment, seizure of narcotics, and the surrender of hundreds of illegal miners.

The Minister of State in charge of Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, in a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Tuesday, October 7, 2025, commended NAIMOS for its dedication and professionalism, describing the latest operation as a “decisive step” in the fight to protect Ghana’s environment and mining communities.

“This is a commendable effort by the Task Force and a decisive step toward safeguarding our environment and communities from the devastating effects of illegal mining,” Mr. Kwakye Ofosu stated.

Details of the Operation

According to NAIMOS, the latest raid resulted in the surrender of hundreds of locals involved in galamsey, drug use, and gambling.
Key outcomes included:

  • Makeshift Structures Destroyed: Several makeshift hideouts and drug bases were set ablaze, while galamsey equipment was destroyed.
  • Hundreds Surrendered: Hundreds of individuals, mostly illegal miners, turned themselves in to the Task Force.
  • Drugs Seized: Eleven parcels of Indian hemp and other hard drugs were confiscated during the exercise.

The operation also extended to the Dadwen-Domping areas within the Tarkwa Nsuaem Municipality, where the Task Force seized 15 water pumping machines and a generator, and destroyed three chanfangs along with other illegal mining structures.

Sustained National Effort

This latest intervention follows a similar crackdown in June 2025, during which NAIMOS issued a stern warning for illegal miners and criminal gangs to vacate galamsey sites—a directive many ignored.

NAIMOS says it remains committed to restoring degraded lands and reducing the environmental and social harm caused by illegal mining in the Western Region and beyond.
