Brussels, Belgium – October 12, 2025
It wasn’t the usual diplomatic speech. Ghana’s Vice President, Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, took the stage in Brussels to deliver a heartfelt message to Ghanaians living abroad: “Tell Ghana’s story right.”
Speaking at a special gathering with the Ghanaian community during the Global Gateway Forum, she urged parents, professionals, and young people in the diaspora to project the nation’s best image wherever they live.
“Our children abroad must grow up proud of who they are,” the Vice President said. “Let us tell them the good stories about Ghana — the culture, the kindness, the resilience — not only the struggles.”
Building Bridges Beyond Borders
The meeting, hosted by the Ghana Embassy in Brussels, brought together chiefs, community leaders, and youth associations from across Europe. Topics on the table ranged from food safety and import duties to illegal mining (galamsey) and youth discipline — issues that connect Ghanaians at home and abroad.
Prof. Opoku-Agyemang reaffirmed the government’s push to end illegal mining, revealing that a new bill to restrict mining in forest reserves and water bodies is in the works.
“We cannot build a future by destroying what sustains us,” she noted, calling on the diaspora to support responsible environmental practices.
Jobs, Innovation & Return Opportunities
The Vice President also highlighted two key government programmes — the Adwumawura Programme and the 24-Hour Economy Policy — both designed to create new job avenues and attract diaspora expertise back home.
She explained that these initiatives aim to turn Ghana into a nation where talent and innovation thrive around the clock.
“These policies are not just about employment,” she said. “They’re about giving every Ghanaian — home or abroad — a fair chance to build and belong.”
A Call to Pride and Purpose
The Vice President praised the Ghanaian community in Belgium for their unity and continued support for national development. She said remittances, skills transfer, and diaspora advocacy remain a crucial backbone of Ghana’s growth.
“Wherever we are, we carry Ghana with us,” she reminded the audience. “Let’s show the world a Ghana that is honest, hardworking, and hopeful.”
