For the first time in history, a direct flight from Accra to Barbados has taken off, not just as a journey across the Atlantic, but as a symbolic homecoming connecting Africa and the Caribbean.
And at the heart of this momentous event stands a Ghanaian woman, Akosua Dentaa Amoateng MBE, founder of the GUBA Awards (Grow, Unite, Build Africa) — joined in history and honour by none other than His Majesty Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the Asantehene, who led a royal delegation to grace the occasion.
Together, they carried Ghana’s spirit across the ocean, blending royalty, culture, and global connection in a powerful show of unity.
A Historic Homecoming across the Atlantic
Hosting the 2025 GUBA Awards in Barbados is far more than a change of venue; it’s a reversal of history.
Centuries ago, enslaved Africans were forcibly taken from Ghana’s shores to the Caribbean.
Now, through GUBA, that journey has come full circle.
This year’s theme, “Reclaiming Our Atlantic Destiny: Build. Connect. Renew.”, captures that poetic reversal. It’s about reclaiming lost ties, rebuilding bridges, and renewing the bonds between two continents that share a common heritage of blood, struggle, and resilience.
Asantehene’s Presence: Tradition Meets Global Vision
The participation of Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, King of the Asante Kingdom, brought unmatched gravitas to the event.
His presence symbolised Ghana’s cultural sovereignty and moral leadership, a monarch crossing oceans not for conquest, but for connection.
In his address, the Asantehene praised initiatives like GUBA for “turning cultural heritage into a force for global unity and empowerment.”
He called for stronger Africa–Caribbean trade, education, and cultural partnerships, affirming that “the Atlantic must no longer divide us — it must unite us.”
For the diaspora and the Caribbean, his presence served as a living bridge between ancestral pride and modern purpose.
Dentaa’s Vision: Culture as Connection
Since founding GUBA in 2009, Dentaa Amoateng has transformed what began as an awards platform into a global diaspora movement.
Her goal: to celebrate and connect Black excellence wherever it exists.
“We are one people separated by water but connected by spirit,” she said.
“GUBA in Barbados is not just a ceremony; it’s a return and a reminder that our strength lies in unity.”
Through her vision, Dentaa has demonstrated that culture, media, and creativity can be powerful tools of diplomacy, building bridges that politics often neglects.

The Flight That Made History
The chartered direct flight from Accra to Barbados, carrying the Asantehene, dignitaries, business leaders, artists, and media, represents a milestone in African mobility and global connection.
It’s more than a convenient route; it’s a spiritual reconnection.
A flight once impossible under colonial trade routes now symbolises a continent rising on its own wings.
It has sparked new conversations about tourism, trade, and education links between Ghana and the Caribbean, potentially opening doors for annual cultural and investment exchanges.
A Celebration Beyond Borders
The GUBA Barbados 2025 event featured dazzling performances, diaspora networking sessions, and tributes to historical figures of African descent.
But beyond the glamour was a clear message that unity is our greatest inheritance.
From Ghana’s royal traditions to Caribbean rhythms, from business panels to cultural exhibitions, the night showcased what happens when Africa and its diaspora come together with purpose.
HotDigitalOnline Reflection
The Asantehene royal journey to Barbados and GUBA’s bold transatlantic vision have created a new page in Ghana’s global story.
It is not just about heritage, it’s about leadership, collaboration, and identity.
This was a Ghana-led, woman-led, and diaspora-led initiative that reminded the world: our strength lies in connection.
Because when Ghana moves, Africa moves, and when Africa connects, the world listens.
