The Ga Mantse and President of the Ga Traditional Council, King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II, has called for a united national effort to tackle Accra’s perennial flooding, stressing that the recurring disaster requires collective responsibility rather than government intervention alone.
In a statement issued and signed by Evelyn Amewotse, Registrar of the Ga Traditional Council, on behalf of the Ga Mantse and President of the Ga Traditional Council, King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II, stated that the Ga Mantse, together with the Ga Traditional Council, expressed concern over the persistent flooding in the national capital and extended sympathy to families, traders, motorists and communities affected by the recent heavy rains.
The statement also commended the renewed efforts of the Government, led by the Greater Accra Regional Minister, Hon. Linda Obenewaa Akweley Ocloo, as well as the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies, the security services, emergency responders and volunteers for their commitment to protecting lives and restoring normalcy.
According to the Ga Traditional Council, flooding in Accra should not be viewed solely as an engineering challenge but as a problem that demands responsible land use, improved sanitation practices, environmental stewardship and respect for natural waterways.
“As custodians of the land, we emphasise that flooding in Accra is not solely an engineering challenge, but a matter that demands collective responsibility,” the statement noted.
The Council reaffirmed its support for sustainable interventions aimed at protecting drainage systems, preventing illegal developments on waterways and promoting community-led sanitation programmes.
It also called for stronger collaboration among government agencies, district assemblies, traditional authorities, faith-based organisations, businesses, youth groups and residents to address the problem.
The Ga Mantse further pledged to leverage the authority and structures of the traditional council to promote behavioural change, civic responsibility and a shared sense of duty among citizens.
The statement stressed that although heavy rains would continue to occur, their devastating impact could be significantly reduced through effective law enforcement, strategic planning and disciplined action.
It expressed confidence that with unity, improved enforcement of regulations and sustained public cooperation, the country could mitigate the effects of flooding and prevent the recurring destruction that has plagued Accra over the years.
