The Member of Parliament for Suhum, Hon. Frank Asiedu Bekoe, has donated 200 streetlights to the Suhum Municipality as part of efforts to improve visibility, enhance public safety and strengthen security ahead of the upcoming Odwira Festival.
The donation is expected to benefit communities, roads and major public areas across the municipality, particularly locations where inadequate lighting has raised concerns about safety and night-time movement.
As part of his commitment to ensuring the intervention is fully implemented, Hon. Bekoe has pledged to personally finance the installation of all 200 streetlights. This, he said, would ensure that the donated equipment is put to immediate use for the benefit of residents.
According to the MP, adequate street lighting is essential to creating safer communities, especially during festive periods when commercial activities, social gatherings and movement increase significantly.
The improved illumination is expected to enhance visibility on roads and in public spaces while helping to discourage criminal activities that may occur in poorly lit areas.
Hon. Bekoe made the donation during his engagement with the Suhum Traditional Council as part of activities surrounding the Akwasidae celebration.
Beyond the streetlight initiative, the engagement also provided an opportunity to discuss other development concerns affecting residents of the municipality.
One of the key issues raised was the proposed relocation of traders from the Amponsah Market. Hon. Bekoe urged the Municipal Chief Executive, Hon. Lydia Sarah Ohenewaa, to reconsider the relocation plan and instead prioritise the completion of the proposed 24-hour economy market.
The MP argued that completing the new facility before relocating traders would provide them with a suitable alternative and help prevent disruptions to their businesses and livelihoods.
With the Odwira Festival expected to attract increased activity and movement within Suhum, the provision of streetlights is seen as a timely intervention to support public safety and improve the environment for residents, traders and visitors.
The engagement further highlighted the importance of cooperation among the Suhum Municipal Assembly, traditional authorities, security agencies, community leaders and residents in addressing security and development challenges.
As the municipality prepares for the festival, the MP’s interventions are expected to contribute to a safer environment while supporting broader efforts to improve infrastructure, economic activity and the wellbeing of residents.
