Moments of Joy: A Christmas Gathering Bringing Comfort, Music and Connection to People Living with Dementia in Newham

On 15 December, HotDigitalOnline was honoured to be invited to a very special Christmas celebration for people living with dementia and their families in Newham, an afternoon filled with warmth, music, laughter and genuine human connection.

The event was part of the growing community initiative Lemonade Days – The Dementia Social Club, a welcoming and supportive space created to bring companionship, understanding and relief to both people living with dementia and their care partners.

A Pilot Born from Care — and a Journey That Grew Into a Charity

The project began as a pilot initiative created by Zethu Makatini, who set out to support people living with dementia and those caring for them, offering a safe environment where they could relax, share experiences and feel seen.

When the pilot phase ended, the care partners themselves chose to continue the work because of the profound difference it was making in their lives. Their commitment led to the formation of a fully recognised charity, called Moments of Joy, in June last year, ensuring the Social Club could keep providing this vital support.

Among those whose lives were transformed by the programme is Brenda Marius. Brenda, whose husband was diagnosed with dementia in 2022, was invited to attend the pilot sessions with him. Having left work for nearly two years, she described that period as a time when “her world was becoming very small.”

The pilot became a lifeline, a turning point that restored connection and confidence. Brenda began volunteering in April last year, and as her involvement and passion grew, she eventually took on the role of running the weekly club sessions, supported by other care partners and valued volunteers.

The Role of Volunteers

Xiao Hu continues to be a deeply valued volunteer whose contribution to the Social Club remains significant. While she does not run the club, her support, energy and dedication play an important part in sustaining the welcoming atmosphere that members appreciate so much.

The club continues to thrive thanks to the combined effort of care partners, volunteers and supporters who give their time and hearts to make each gathering meaningful.

A Christmas Gathering Full of Music, Comfort and Connection

The Christmas event perfectly captured what Moments of Joy represents.

There was singing, dancing, music, handbells and shared laughter — with gentle moments of reflection alongside lively moments of movement and interaction. Families and care partners relaxed, chatted, played games like dominoes, and enjoyed the warmth of simply being together.

Above all, it was a space where everyone felt free to be themselves, without pressure or judgement, just community, understanding and companionship.

“A Place Where No One Faces Dementia Alone”

What stands out most at Moments of Joy is the feeling of belonging.

The club offers families reassurance that they are not alone, and gives people living with dementia a chance to experience joy, dignity, social connection and emotional relief.

HotDigitalOnline Pledges Support

HotDigitalOnline Founder Mr Vandyck attended the celebration and was deeply moved by the compassion and togetherness on display.

Witnessing the happiness shared among families and participants left a lasting impression, and he pledged HotDigitalOnline’s continued support to amplify the charity’s work and impact.
