Moments of Joy: A Christmas Gathering Bringing Comfort, Music and Connection to People Living with Dementia in Newham

On 15 December, HotDigitalOnline was honoured to be invited to a very special Christmas celebration for people living with dementia and their families in Newham, an afternoon filled with warmth, laughter, music, and genuine human connection.

The event formed part of a growing community initiative, Moments of Joy – The Dementia Social Club, a safe and welcoming space created to support people living with dementia and their loved ones.

A Pilot Born from Care and Vision

This meaningful initiative began as a pilot project started by Xiao Hu, driven by a simple but powerful idea: to create a place where people living with dementia can feel comfortable, included, and understood.

Recognising the project’s importance and impact, Zethu Makatini and Brenda Marius have since partnered with Xiao Hu Zethu to help represent and grow Moments of Joy. Together, they are currently self-funding the Dementia Social Club, a testament to their dedication and belief in the value of this work.

A Truly Warm and Joyful Afternoon

The Christmas gathering perfectly captured the club’s spirit.

As Xiao Hu shared:

“It was a truly warm and joyful afternoon. We had singing, dancing, instrumental performances and handbells, and each moment brought smiles and energy into the room. One dance in particular created a wonderful shared moment, with a lot of spontaneous interaction that was very moving to see.”

Families, carers, and people living with dementia came together in a relaxed environment where everyone felt free to talk, laugh, and be themselves. Games like dominoes, familiar songs, and gentle dancing created moments of connection that clearly meant a great deal to everyone present.

A Space Where People Can Truly Be Themselves

What stood out most was the sense of ease and belonging in the room. There was no pressure, no judgment, just shared understanding and companionship.

The club offers something invaluable: a place where families realise they are not alone, and where people living with dementia can experience joy, dignity, and meaningful social interaction.

HotDigitalOnline Pledges Its Support

Mr Vandyck, founder of HotDigitalOnline, attended the event and was visibly moved by the experience.

Seeing the happiness, engagement, and comfort shared between participants and their families left a lasting impression. Mr Vandyck has since pledged HotDigitalOnline’s support for this noble initiative, recognising its positive impact on individuals and the wider community.

An Open Invitation to Nearby Boroughs

Moments of Joy – The Dementia Social Club is encouraging families from Newham and neighbouring boroughs to bring along their loved ones living with dementia.

This is a welcoming space where people can:

  • Connect with others who understand
  • Share experiences and conversations
  • Enjoy music, games, and movement
  • Find comfort through community

Weekly Sessions

The Dementia Social Club runs once a week:

Tuesdays
11:00 am – 2:30 pm

Families, carers, and individuals living with dementia are warmly invited to attend.

Final Thought

At a time when dementia can often feel isolating, Moments of Joy reminds us of the power of music, movement, shared laughter, and human connection.

HotDigitalOnline is proud to stand alongside this initiative and help amplify its message:

No one should face dementia alone, and moments of joy truly matter.
