The Education Minister, Haruna Iddrisu, has directed the immediate suspension of the Headmaster of Obuasi Senior High Technical School, Zakaria Abdulai, pending investigations into allegations of sexual misconduct involving a female student.
The directive from the minister follows a media report suggesting the headmaster misconducted himself sexually against a female student of Obuasi SHTS in the Ashanti Region.
In a statement signed by the Minister’s Press Secretary, Hashmin Mohammed, the Ministry said Mr Iddrisu had instructed the Director-General of the Ghana Education Service (GES) to take immediate steps to suspend Abdulai while investigations are conducted.
The minister has also requested the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service to commence investigations into the matter.
“The Honourable Minister considers the issue serious and has directed the Director General of the Ghana Education Service to take effective immediate steps to suspend the Headmaster, Mr. Zakaria Abdulai, pending full investigations into the matter,” the statement said.
The Ministry of Education and the GES reiterated their position that alleged misconduct of this nature would not be tolerated in any educational institution in the country.
They stressed that teachers and school authorities had a responsibility to protect students entrusted to their care by parents and guardians.
“Parents and Guardians have entrusted their wards in the care of teachers whose responsibilities are to protect and safeguard the children and not abuse them,” the statement added.
