The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has suspended Daniel Nortey from media appearances and public engagements on behalf of the party over comments he made during a radio discussion on the alleged sexual abuse case involving the headmaster of Obuasi Senior High Technical School (SHTS).
In a statement on Thursday, October 22, 2026, the party’s National Communication Bureau said the suspension takes immediate effect and will remain in force until further notice.
Mr. Nortey sparked criticism after reportedly asking during the discussion, “Why are we behaving as if it is not normal to rape someone? Which man hasn’t raped a lady before?”
His remarks came amid public outrage over allegations of sexual abuse involving the headmaster of Obuasi SHTS, a case that has drawn attention to student safety and the responsibility of school authorities to protect learners.
The controversy surrounding the school has also generated calls for the allegations to be investigated and handled through the appropriate procedures.
The NDC condemned Mr. Nortey’s comments, saying it viewed them with “serious concern and distaste”.
“We condemn remarks that trivialise such allegations or undermine the seriousness with which they must be treated,” the party stated.
The party acknowledged that Mr. Nortey had offered an unreserved apology but stressed the need for responsible public commentary on sensitive issues.
“The Party acknowledges this apology but emphasizes the importance of responsible public commentary,” the statement added.
The NDC further maintained that allegations of sexual abuse must be treated with sensitivity and respect for due process, particularly where children’s safety and welfare are concerned.
“The NDC remains committed to the protection of women and children, accountability and the principle that allegations of sexual abuse must be handled with the seriousness they deserve and in accordance with the law,” the statement said.
The suspension bars Mr. Nortey from representing the party in media appearances and public engagements until further notice. The allegations against the headmaster must be addressed through the appropriate investigative and legal processes.
