A legal battle is unfolding as former Director General of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service, Commissioner of Police (COP) Faustina Agyeiwaa Kodua Andoh-Kwofie, has filed a defamation suit against a national security operative and several media organisations.
The suit names Charles Amegadzie as the first defendant, alongside other individuals and media entities including Prosper Kay, Roger A. Agana, NewsGhana.com.gh, The Supreme Newspaper, Cloudview Technology Limited, and Opera Norway AS.
According to the writ, the plaintiff alleges that Amegadzie caused the publication of a story relating to a disputed piece of land, which portrayed her as having used her position within the police service to engage in land grabbing.
She has firmly denied the allegations, describing the claims as “completely false” and damaging to her reputation.
COP Andoh-Kwofie is seeking a declaration from the High Court that the publication is defamatory.
She is also asking the court to compel the defendants to retract the story, delete it entirely, and issue an unqualified apology.
In addition, she is demanding GH¢10 million in general damages, along with aggravated and exemplary damages, arguing that the publication was reckless and malicious.
She is also seeking a perpetual injunction to prevent the defendants from making any further similar publications.
The former CID boss maintains that the land matter referenced in the publication is already before a court of competent jurisdiction, and insists that portraying her as a corrupt public officer constitutes a serious misrepresentation of facts.
