Govt orders immediate shutdown of Gumah FM, six others

The Ministry of Communication, Digital Technology, and Innovations has ordered the immediate shutdown of Gumah FM Station in Bawku due to national security concerns.

In addition to the shutdown of Gumah FM, the sector minister, Sam Nartey George, also directed the National Communications Authority (NCA) to take immediate enforcement action against multiple broadcasting entities operating without valid frequency authorizations.

In the case of the Gumah FM, the decision follows an emergency meeting held on February 11, 2025, by the Upper East Regional Security Council (REGSEC), which reviewed the security situation in Bawku and the North East Region.

According to a statement by the ministry, Gumah FM Station has been used as a platform to incite violence, disrupt public order, and escalate tensions in the area.

In response, the government, through the National Communications Authority (NCA), has invoked Section 13(1)(e) of the Electronic Communications Act, 2008 (Act 775), which allows for the suspension or revocation of frequency authorizations in the interest of national security and public order.

As a result of this, Gumah FM Station has immediately ceased all operations, while authorities monitor the situation to prevent the creation of alternative platforms that could incite further violence or destabilise the region.

Also explaining the reasons behind the shutdown order for the other radio stations, the ministry said the affected stations failed to renew their licenses, fulfill statutory payment obligations, or submit required documentation within the given timeframe.

“As a result, their authorisations have lapsed, rendering their continued operations illegal under Section 2(4) of the Electronic Communications Act, 2008 (Act 775),” the statement read.

The other affected entities include Fire Group of Companies, Sunyani – 90.1MHz, I-Zar Consult Limited, Tamale – 89.7MHz, Abochannel Media Group, Addiome – 105.7MHz, Okyeame Radio Limited, Bibiani – 99.7MHz, Mumen Bono Foundation, Techiman – 99.7MHz, Osikani Community FM, and Nkrankwanta – 99.7MHz.

The Ministry of Communication urged all media houses to operate responsibly and adhere strictly to their frequency authorisation conditions.
