Mahama pledges dedicated funding for free SHS
Former President John Dramani Mahama has pledged to establish a dedicated funding source for the Free Senior High School (SHS) policy, aiming to secure its sustainability and ensure consistent access for Ghanaian students. Addressing Christian leaders in Kumasi on Monday, November 11, Mahama reiterated his support for the program, dismissing claims that he intends to cancel it if re-elected as mere “political gimmick.”
“Free SHS has come to stay,” Mahama affirmed, noting that the program has increased access to education nationwide. However, he emphasized the need to secure adequate funding to maintain and improve the program, highlighting that sustainable funding would help address long-standing concerns regarding quality and consistency.
The meeting, called Mahama Fellowships with the Clergy, Kumasi Edition, gathered Christian leaders from various denominations across the Ashanti Region. Mahama underscored his commitment to fulfilling Article 25 (1b) of Ghana’s 1992 Constitution, which mandates access to quality education, and to advancing Sustainable Development Goal 4 on equitable education.
Mahama’s proposed dedicated funding source aims to bolster the policy’s viability, ensuring that Free SHS remains a lasting part of Ghana’s educational landscape.
