Election 2024: Ghana Armed Forces clarifies role in upcoming elections
GAF Clarifies Role in December 7 Elections
The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has assured the public that no military personnel will be stationed at polling stations during the December 7 Presidential and Parliamentary elections.
In a statement released on December 1, GAF emphasized that their role will be strictly limited to providing standby support upon formal requests from the Ghana Police Service (GPS). The GPS will lead all election security efforts, with the military stepping in only for specific reinforcements as needed.
“To maintain the integrity of the electoral process, GAF personnel will not be deployed to polling stations. Any military involvement will be based on official requests from the GPS to handle situations requiring additional support,” the statement read.
GAF also urged the public to report any unauthorized individuals claiming to be military personnel at polling stations to the nearest police station or through GPS toll-free numbers: 18555 or 0800 311 311.
The Armed Forces reiterated their dedication to protecting Ghana’s stability, sovereignty, and the integrity of the democratic process, encouraging citizens to exercise their rights responsibly and cooperate with security personnel.
