Three Dead, Four Injured in Attempted Gold Theft at Newmont Mining Site

Three people have been confirmed dead and four others injured after an alleged attempt to steal gold at the Newmont Mining Site in Ntotroso, Ahafo Region, last Wednesday night.

The Ghana Police Service reported that the fatalities and injuries occurred during a confrontation between police and the suspects, who were allegedly trying to breach security at the site.

Police Restore Calm

A statement signed by Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Grace Ansah-Akrofi, Director of Public Affairs, indicated that calm has been restored to Ntotroso. The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, coordinated with the Ahafo Regional Police to engage local leaders and youth overnight to stabilize the situation.

The police confirmed that no reprisal attacks or further escalation had been recorded in the community.

Investigation Underway

A special investigation team from Accra has been deployed to Ntotroso to examine the incident, and additional police reinforcements have been sent to the area to maintain peace and order.

Burial Arrangements

The police noted that the deceased individuals were Muslims, and their bodies have been released to their families for burial in accordance with Islamic traditions.

The Ghana Police Service has urged the public to remain calm as investigations continue, assuring citizens of their commitment to maintaining peace, security, and the rule of law.
