Sammy Gyamfi slams NPP over criticism of Mahama’s Supreme Court nominations

Acting Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Gold Board, Sammy Gyamfi, has launched a fierce critique of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), accusing the party of double standards and political hypocrisy in its opposition to President John Mahama’s nomination of Justice Senyo Dzamefe to the Supreme Court.
In an interview on Joy News on Saturday, May 3, Gyamfi said the NPP’s reaction to the appointment lacked substance and only revealed the party’s selective memory when it comes to judicial matters.
defending justice dzamefe’s qualifications
Gyamfi passionately defended the nominee, describing Justice Dzamefe as one of the most experienced and deserving candidates for the Supreme Court.
“Justice Senyo Dzamefe served as a State Attorney from 1984 to 1987, was a member of the Regional Tribunal from 1989 to 1996, Circuit Court Judge from 1996 to 2000, High Court Judge from 2000 to 2010, and Court of Appeal Judge from 2010 to 2025,” he listed.
He argued that the nominee’s lengthy and dedicated judicial service made him far more qualified than others who were “fast-tracked” under the previous administration.
npp accused of political bias in judicial promotions
“The problem with the NPP is the duplicity and the hypocrisy they continue to display. That is what I find nauseating in all these discussions,” Gyamfi asserted.
He accused the former government of deliberately sidelining experienced judges in favour of younger, politically convenient appointees, calling their current opposition to Mahama’s nominations a “sacrilegious” reversal.
“We all know you refused to promote these fine legal minds to the Supreme Court and instead elevated their juniors by as many as 20 years purely for cheap political gains,” he said.
restoring credibility to the bench
Describing the appointment as a step toward restoring balance and fairness in the judiciary, Gyamfi said President Mahama is committed to reversing injustices caused by political manipulation of the bench.
“What we are doing now is correcting the wrongs of the past. We are delivering justice to victims of injustice,” he stated.
In a bold conclusion, he said the President would not be swayed by partisan outrage: “You can burn the sea if you don’t like it. President Mahama will not be remote-controlled by you.”
