Education Ministry Secures $117.1m Boost for Basic Schools Under Expanded GALOP Programme

The Ministry of Education has announced a significant financial boost of $117.1 million under the Ghana Accountability for Learning Outcomes Project (GALOP) and its second additional financing (AF2), aimed at strengthening interventions in basic schools across the country.

The announcement was made during the inaugural meeting of the GALOP Project Oversight Committee on Tuesday, July 15, 2025.

The new funding—sourced through support from the World Bank, the Global Partnership for Education, and other development partners—will go towards targeted teacher training, school grants, and performance-based incentives to enhance learning outcomes in the country’s basic education sector.

Speaking on behalf of Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu, who chairs the committee, the Ministry stressed the importance of strong monitoring systems and proper deployment of interventions to ensure success.

“GALOP AF2 provides an additional $117.1 million to scale up targeted interventions in basic schools. We must ensure that every intervention—from teacher training and school grants to performance-based incentives—is effectively deployed and monitored,” the statement read.

The Minister further remarked that the committee’s success would be judged by its oversight, direction, and ability to respond to real-world challenges in education delivery.

The meeting brought together development partners, representatives of the World Bank, agency heads, and committee members to discuss how to ensure smooth implementation of the programme and drive measurable results in basic education.

The Education Ministry reiterated that robust oversight and adaptive systems would be essential in transforming the funding into real improvements in teaching and learning outcomes across the country.
