Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu Reveals Internal NPP Politics Behind His Removal as Majority Leader

Accra, March 5, 2025 – Former Majority Leader and Suame MP, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, has disclosed details about the internal politics within the New Patriotic Party (NPP) that led to his removal, clearing the way for Alexander Afenyo-Markin to assume the role.

In an interview on Asempa FM on Tuesday, March 4, Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu revealed that he had received advance warnings from about 80 MPs that President Nana Akufo-Addo wanted him out.

📌 Key Takeaways from His Remarks:

  • Several MPs urged him to fight back, promising their support.
  • He ultimately chose to resign voluntarily to prevent deepening divisions within the party.
  • The decision was influenced by NPP’s declining influence in the Central Region ahead of the 2024 elections.

The Role of Central Region Politics

Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu recalled an emergency meeting convened by President Akufo-Addo before the elections, during which the president expressed concern about the NPP’s weakening hold in the Central Region.

💬 “The president argued that the NDC was gaining ground in the Central Region, especially with Naana Opoku-Agyemang likely to be Mahama’s running mate and Ato Forson taking up the Minority Leader position,” he stated.

Akufo-Addo reportedly viewed Afenyo-Markin, a Central Region native, as a strategic choice to counter the growing influence of the opposition NDC in the region.

Despite opposition from many MPs, Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu saw where things were headed and decided to step aside rather than escalate tensions within the party.

📌 Political analysts suggest that his exit marks a shift in the NPP’s leadership strategy, as the party looks to reorganize ahead of the 2028 elections.
