Akufo-Addo Denies Involvement in Alleged Move to Delay NPP Conference

Former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has categorically denied claims that he is seeking to influence the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to reverse its decision on early primaries or to postpone its upcoming National Delegates Conference scheduled for Saturday, July 19, 2025.

The denial comes amid media reports suggesting that the former President had taken steps to delay the conference or overturn party decisions regarding internal elections.

In a statement released by his office on Monday, July 14, Mr. Akufo-Addo’s camp described the allegations as “completely false.”

“President Akufo-Addo, who has been out of the jurisdiction for some time now, has not made any such requests to the party—either through a petition or by any other means—and has no intention of doing so,” the statement clarified.

The former President’s office further stated, “Clearly, those behind these publications have an agenda of their own, which has nothing to do with improving the fortunes of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).”

Meanwhile, the NPP has confirmed that the upcoming National Delegates Conference will go ahead as planned. According to party officials, the July 19 gathering will focus on constitutional reforms, including discussions on the report submitted by the Prof. Mike Oquaye Committee.

Also on the agenda is a long-standing proposal first adopted at the 2019 Delegates Conference in Kumasi, which has yet to be formally ratified by the party.

The leadership has urged all delegates and party stakeholders to disregard unverified media reports and focus on the core purpose of the conference—strengthening internal democracy and party unity ahead of future elections.
