Presidency Defends National Security Raids, Says It’s Part of Ongoing Investigations

Accra, Ghana – March 20, 2025Deputy Presidential Spokesperson, Shamima Muslim, has defended the recent raids on the homes of former government officials, stating that they are part of ongoing investigations aimed at gathering information.

Speaking on TV3’s New Day on Thursday, March 20, 2025, Shamima Muslim dismissed allegations of political persecution, insisting that the government is only ensuring accountability.

Her comments come in the wake of reports that National Security Operatives raided the home of former Bank of Ghana Governor, Dr. Ernest Addison, on Wednesday, March 19, 2025. On the same day, journalist Okatakyie Afrifa Mensah was also arrested but later released in the evening.

Additionally, on February 11, 2025, security operatives allegedly raided the residence of former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta, intensifying concerns about a crackdown on ex-officials of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration.

Government Denies Political Persecution

Shamima Muslim, while acknowledging that she had yet to receive a full briefing on Dr. Addison’s case, emphasized that those affected are simply persons of interest in investigations.

“I’m yet to get to the office to receive a full briefing on the matter, but what I can say is that there are some actions going on, there are some investigations ongoing, and there are persons of interest who will now and again be invited to help the investigation process. There are means of gathering information, and one of the means is to visit the homes of these persons of interest,” she explained.

She, however, stressed that due process must be followed during these operations.

“I will just say that we should execute these processes with due recourse to due process, and once we are doing that, we should have no problem,” she added.

Minority Condemns Raids, Calls for Respect for Human Rights

The raids have drawn sharp criticism from Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin and other NPP executives, who have condemned the actions as politically motivated and a violation of democratic principles and human rights.

Presidency Accuses NPP of Sabotage

Shamima Muslim, however, dismissed these concerns, claiming that the NPP is using propaganda to evade accountability.

“The Minority would always deliberately position themselves to oppose any action that the government takes in its quest to demand audit and accountability from the outgone government… sometimes exaggerating the issue and deliberately misrepresenting the action that is being taken,” she stated.

She also compared the situation to 2017, when she claimed former President Akufo-Addo’s administration treated NDC officials unfairly upon taking office.

Shamima Muslim urged Ghanaians not to fall for NPP’s propaganda, emphasizing that President Mahama’s reset agenda is still on course.

As of now, the government has yet to provide further details on the specific allegations leading to the raids and arrests, but civil society organizations and legal experts continue to call for transparency and adherence to democratic principles.
