Former President Kufuor Visits President Mahama to Condole Following Military Helicopter Tragedy

Accra, August 7, 2025 – Former President John Agyekum Kufuor paid a solemn visit to President John Dramani Mahama and First Lady Lordina Mahama at the Jubilee House on Thursday to express his condolences and solidarity following the devastating military helicopter crash that has plunged the nation into mourning.

The visit, marked by quiet reflection and heartfelt exchange, was widely seen as a gesture of statesmanship and national unity. Former President Kufuor was received by Vice President Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang and senior government officials, who extended their appreciation for his presence and support during this difficult time.

Tragedy in the Skies

The national tragedy occurred on Wednesday, August 6, when a Ghana Armed Forces Z-9 helicopter went off radar and crashed at Adansi Akrofrom in the Ashanti Region. The crash claimed the lives of all on board, including prominent political and military figures.

Among the deceased were:

  • Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, Minister of Defence
  • Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, Minister of Environment
  • Muniru Mohammed, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator
  • Samuel Aboagye, former parliamentary candidate
  • Samuel Sarpong, NDC Vice Chairman

The military officers who also perished were:

  • Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala
  • Flying Officer Manin Twum-Ampadu
  • Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah

The Ghana Armed Forces confirmed that there were no survivors, and investigations are ongoing to determine the cause of the crash.

President Mahama, who has declared a national mourning period, received the former president’s gesture with gratitude. The visit is being hailed across political lines as a reminder of the need for unity in grief and strength in solidarity during national crises.
