Chairman Wontumi Withdraws Bail Review Motion Amid Expanded Criminal Investigations

ACCRA, June 2, 2025 — Bernard Antwi Boasiako, widely known as Chairman Wontumi, has withdrawn his motion challenging the GH¢50 million bail condition imposed on him by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO). The move comes just a day before the motion was scheduled to be heard at the Accra High Court on Tuesday, June 3.
The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), who has been in EOCO custody since May 28, was seeking a review of what his legal team described as “excessive” bail terms, arguing they could delay or obstruct his release.
However, on Monday, June 2, his legal representatives formally withdrew the application without providing public reasons for the move.
Background
Chairman Wontumi is facing multiple serious charges, including:
- Fraud
- Causing financial loss to the state
- Money laundering
He was granted bail with the condition of GH¢50 million and two justified sureties, which has drawn strong reactions from supporters and party members who believe the terms are politically motivated.
Despite efforts to meet the bail terms by May 30, procedural delays have kept him in custody.
International Crime Syndicate Allegations
In a significant development, Deputy Attorney General Justice Srem-Sai has disclosed that the second phase of the investigation has uncovered links between Chairman Wontumi and an alleged international organised crime syndicate.
This revelation suggests that the case may expand beyond Ghana’s borders and involve international legal cooperation.
The withdrawal of the motion may indicate a shift in legal strategy, potentially in response to the intensifying investigation or a decision to pursue alternative remedies outside of court.
Chairman Wontumi remains in custody as investigations continue.
