Ghanaian rapper Sarkodie has described a frightening road crash involving highlife musician Amakye Dede while travelling from Kumasi to the veteran singer’s home in Agogo.
Speaking in a video shared on social media, Sarkodie said the car carrying the pair was involved in a head-on collision with another vehicle before leaving the road and coming to a stop in nearby bushland.
Amakye Dede was sitting in the front passenger seat, while Sarkodie was in the back with the driver and his cameraman. The four people in the vehicle were travelling as part of a convoy, but the other cars were still some distance behind when the collision happened.
That meant those in the damaged vehicle had to deal with the immediate aftermath themselves before the rest of the group reached them. The crash also attracted bystanders, who gathered around the scene.
Sarkodie said one exchange with a woman who had stopped after getting off a bus remained particularly striking. Rather than asking whether he was safe, she approached him and asked for a photograph.
“People saw the accident, but they didn’t know it was us. One girl came down from the bus and said to me, ‘Where else will I meet you again? Let me take a selfie with you.’ She didn’t ask how I was doing,” he recalled.
The rapper said the incident showed how some members of the public can see a famous person primarily through their public image, rather than as an individual facing a distressing situation.
“That’s why I am saying they don’t see a human; they see Sarkodie,” he added.
His account has highlighted the experience of being recognised in public during moments of crisis, and the way celebrity status can shape how bystanders respond to unexpected events.
