Ghana midfielder Caleb Yirenkyi has received continental recognition for his impressive rise in football after being nominated for the Men’s Young Player of the Year award at the 2026 CAF Awards.
The 20-year-old is among 10 nominees competing for the prestigious honour, which celebrates the outstanding young talents making their mark on African football.
Yirenkyi enjoyed a memorable year, particularly with his performances for Ghana at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where he emerged as one of the Black Stars’ standout performers.
One of his defining moments came against Panama, when he scored the winning goal to secure an important group-stage victory for Ghana.
His composure, energy and influence in midfield caught the attention of football followers beyond the continent, further strengthening his reputation as one of Ghana’s most promising young players.
The midfielder’s impressive displays also helped open the door to a move to English football, with Premier League club Coventry City securing his services.
For Yirenkyi, the CAF nomination represents another significant milestone in what has been a rapid rise from a promising prospect to a player attracting attention on the international stage.
His versatility has been one of his biggest strengths. Comfortable contributing defensively while also supporting attacking moves, he has demonstrated the qualities of a modern midfielder capable of influencing games at both ends of the pitch.
However, the Ghanaian faces stiff competition for the award.
Among those shortlisted are Bayer Leverkusen’s Ibrahim Maza, Barcelona youngster Hamza Abdelkarim, Christian Kofane and Yan Diomande.
The remaining nominees are Christ Inao, Ismaël Kamissoko, Abdellah Ouazane, Ayoub Bouaddi and Ibrahima Mbaye.
With several exciting prospects in contention, the race for the award is expected to be closely contested.
Yirenkyi will be hoping his contributions to Ghana’s World Cup campaign, combined with his progress at club level, will be enough to convince voters that he deserves the continental recognition.
The winner will be announced at the 2026 CAF Awards ceremony in Lagos, Nigeria, on 7 December.
Regardless of the final outcome, the nomination marks another important step in Yirenkyi’s development and offers further evidence of Ghana’s continued production of exciting young football talent.
