Queen Maxima of the Netherlands travelled to Kumasi in Ghana’s Ashanti Region to take part in the sacred Awukudae festival hosted by the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.
The visiting monarch was welcomed at Prempeh I International Airport by Nana Kwame Baffoe, the Paramount Chief of Nkoranza. He is traditionally regarded as the eldest son of the Asantehene.
Queen Maxima drew attention on her arrival in Kumasi last Wednesday when she joined dancers performing the Adowa on the airport tarmac.
The Adowa is a traditional dance of the Asantes, and the queen took part shortly after arriving in the city.
Her programme also included a private meeting with Otumfuo Osei Tutu II at Manhyia Palace, the traditional seat of the Asante Kingdom.
That meeting took place after the Awukudae festival.
