In preparation towards the national clean-up exercise, Akyem Oda MP and former Deputy Minister for Health Alexander Akwasi Acquah has committed at least GH¢3,000 to each electoral area in the Birim Central Municipality to assist assembly members in resolving sanitation issues.
The funding is a component of the MP’s larger plan to enhance waste management, improve environmental sanitation, and lessen floods in the many communities within the Municipality.
Under the initiative, each Assembly Member will be able to organize community clean-up exercises, desilt drains, clear choked gutters, remove refuse from flood-prone areas, and undertake other sanitation activities tailored to the needs of their respective Electoral Areas.
The intervention comes as the country prepares for the National General Cleaning Days scheduled for Friday, July 10, and Saturday, July 11, 2026, following the devastating floods that recently affected several parts of the country.
The nationwide exercise, organised by the government through the Post-Flood Mitigation Committee, is themed “Our Actions, Our Future: Cleaning Ghana after the floods.” It seeks to mobilise citizens to restore environmental cleanliness while implementing measures to prevent future flooding.
Government has described the exercise as a critical national intervention and has called on all Ghanaians to actively participate in efforts to improve sanitation and safeguard communities against flood-related disasters.
As part of the initiative, Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs), Chief Executive Officers of state institutions, Members of Parliament and other government appointees have been directed to personally lead clean-up activities within their respective jurisdictions.
Adding Parliament’s support to the campaign, the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, has urged Members of Parliament to take leading roles in mobilising residents, traditional authorities, youth groups, civil society organisations and Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) to ensure the success of the nationwide clean-up exercise.
According to Speaker Bagbin, legislators have a responsibility to lead by example in promoting environmental sanitation and helping reduce the risk of future flooding in their constituencies.
He further disclosed that Parliament’s leadership would make the necessary arrangements to enable MPs from the affected regions to return to their constituencies to coordinate and participate in the exercise.
Against this backdrop, Mr. Acquah’s decision to provide direct financial support to Assembly Members is expected to significantly strengthen grassroots participation in the campaign and ensure that sanitation interventions are driven at the community level.
Residents across the Birim Central Municipality are expected to join Assembly Members, traditional leaders, youth groups and other stakeholders during the two-day exercise as part of efforts to create a cleaner environment, improve public health and build more resilient communities capable of withstanding future flooding.
