The Tema Regional Police Command has arrested a suspect after intercepting a large quantity of compressed plant material suspected to be indian hemp during an operation along the Tema-Ada road.
The suspect, identified as Bismark Kpormeno, was apprehended on Sunday, May 31, 2026, by officers of the Tema Highway Patrol Unit following a pursuit that began when he allegedly failed to stop at a police checkpoint.
According to a press release issued by ASP Dede Dzakpasu, Head of Public Affairs for the Tema Regional Police Command, the suspect was driving a Hyundai Mighty II container truck when officers signalled him to stop. Instead of complying, he reportedly attempted to evade arrest, prompting a chase by the patrol team.
Police said the suspect was eventually intercepted and arrested at Bondase after a successful pursuit.
A subsequent search of the vehicle uncovered twelve sacks and eighty parcels of compressed plant material concealed inside the container and wrapped in sellotape. The substance is suspected to be narcotic drugs, pending further examination.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the consignment was allegedly loaded at Kpeve in the Volta Region and was being transported to Ada at the time of the arrest.
The suspect remains in police custody and is assisting investigators with ongoing inquiries. The truck used in transporting the suspected drugs, together with the recovered exhibits, has been impounded as evidence.
The Tema Regional Police Command reiterated its commitment to combating drug trafficking and other criminal activities within its jurisdiction. The Command also appealed to the public to support law enforcement efforts by providing timely and credible information on suspicious activities to help curb crime and enhance public safety.
