EC disqualifies GFP’s new flagbearer over illegalities

The Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana has disqualified Philip Appiah Kubi, the Ghana Freedom Party’s (GFP) replacement flagbearer, from the December 2024 presidential election due to errors and legal violations found on his nomination form. EC Chair Jean Mensa announced the decision at a press conference on Tuesday, November 12.

After the unexpected passing of GFP founder and initial flagbearer Akua Donkor on October 15, the party submitted Kubi as her replacement within a 10-day extension provided by the EC. However, upon examination of Kubi’s paperwork, the EC identified issues that went beyond mere clerical mistakes, including elements they labeled as “illegitimate” under electoral law.

Jean Mensa stated that while some of the errors were corrected by the party, others compromised the integrity of the documentation to a degree that disqualification was necessary. She underscored the EC’s commitment to maintaining the integrity of the electoral process, asserting that no irregularities, regardless of the circumstances, would be permitted in the nomination process.
