Kumasi Mayor Launches Major Decongestion Exercise, Vows to Clear Pavements

The Mayor of Kumasi, Richard Ofori Agyeman, has announced the launch of a city-wide decongestion exercise by the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA), beginning today, Monday, May 5, 2025.
The operation will target unauthorised structures and vendors occupying public spaces. It will begin at key locations including the Kejetia Roundabout—popularly known as the Otumfuo Roundabout—and the Adehyeman area near the Kumasi Zoo.
“We will ensure that everyone occupying those spaces is removed. Any metallic object placed on the street will be cleared,” the mayor firmly stated during a press briefing.
He added that sufficient public notices had already been issued and the Assembly would no longer tolerate violations. “I will not make any more announcements. Everyone knows we will not entertain them there,” he declared.
Since assuming office, Mayor Agyeman has taken a hardline stance on urban disorder and has warned traders operating illegally along pavements in the Central Business District of strict sanctions. He previously stirred public debate by threatening to lash recalcitrant traders as a more effective deterrent, arguing that the usual methods—such as arresting traders and seizing their goods—have failed to stop them from returning.
He cited persistent congestion in Kumasi as a direct result of what he called acts of “indiscipline” and vowed to restore order in the city.
The mayor’s bold approach signals a renewed effort to sanitize Kumasi’s bustling streets and restore free movement for both pedestrians and motorists.
