Ghana Gas CEO raises alarm over illegal mining threat to national gas pipeline

The Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana National Gas Company, Judith Adjobah Blay, has sounded a strong warning about illegal mining activities near Akango in the Nzema East Municipality of the Western Region, stating that such encroachment poses a serious threat to the country’s critical gas infrastructure.

During a tour of the affected area on August 2, Madam Blay told Channel One TV that the illegal activities are dangerously close to the inflammable gas pipeline, which transports lean gas from the Atuabo Gas Processing Plant to Kumasi for power generation.

“Any damage to this pipeline could lead to catastrophic consequences—not only in terms of national energy supply disruptions but also potential safety hazards for nearby communities,” she cautioned.

She revealed that Ghana Gas is taking immediate action to secure the area and prevent further illegal mining activities, stressing the urgency of protecting the integrity of the pipeline.

Madam Blay also called on local communities to collaborate with authorities in safeguarding the infrastructure, noting that the fight against illegal mining requires collective vigilance and community support.

The pipeline, which began construction in 2012, runs through Atuabo, Esiama, and Prestea to Kumasi, playing a key role in electricity generation and energy security. However, rising illegal mining activities are now jeopardising the safety and functionality of this vital national asset.
