Ghanaian Member of Parliament and musician-turned-politician Kwame Asare Obeng, popularly known as A Plus, has called for the death penalty to be imposed on a 72-year-old man accused of killing two people.
In a strongly worded Facebook post, the Gomoa Central MP expressed outrage over the alleged killings, particularly the psychological trauma the incident could have inflicted on the children of one of the victims.
According to A Plus, the circumstances surrounding the incident, which reportedly occurred in the presence of the suspect’s wife while the children of one of the victims were at home, raise serious concerns about the devastating impact of violent crimes on families.
He questioned how the affected children would recover from the trauma of losing a family member under such horrific circumstances.
“If I were President of Ghana, I would ensure that he receives the death penalty and his execution is broadcast live as a deterrent to others,” he stated.
The MP argued that some crimes must attract severe consequences to discourage others from engaging in similar acts of violence.
He further stressed the need for society to recognise the sanctity of human life and ensure that those who unlawfully take the lives of others face appropriate punishment.
“People must understand that human life is sacred and that there must be consequences for taking it. People must learn sense!” he added.
A Plus’ comments have brought renewed attention to the debate surrounding capital punishment in Ghana and the appropriate consequences for individuals convicted of serious violent crimes.
His call for the live broadcast of an execution, however, represents a particularly strong position on how the state should respond to such offences.
However, the accused person’s guilt would have to be established through the due process of law before any punishment can be imposed.
